Will vs. Be Going To

We use will and be going to to talk about the future. Although both are used for future events, they have different meanings and are used in different situations.

Form

  • Will: Subject + will + base verb
  • Be going to: Subject + am/is/are + going to + base verb

Examples:

  • I will study for the test tonight.
  • She is going to visit her grandmother this weekend.

Use

We use will for:

  • Decisions made at the moment of speaking
  • Predictions based on opinions or beliefs
  • Offers and promises

Examples:

  • It’s cold. I will close the window.
  • I think it will rain tomorrow.
  • I will help you with your homework.

We use be going to for:

  • Plans or intentions
  • Predictions based on what we see or know now

Examples:

  • I’m going to start a new job next week.
  • Look at those clouds! It is going to rain.
