"Was" and "were" are the past tense forms of the verb to be. We use them to talk about something in the past.

Form and Use

  • Was is used with I, he, she, it.
  • Were is used with you, we, they.

Use "was" and "were" to:

  • Talk about a past state or situation.
  • Talk about where someone or something was.

Quick Tips

Keep in mind the following tips before you start practicing our was were exercises.
  • Use was for one person or thing (singular).
  • Use were for more than one person or thing (plural).
  • “You” always takes were, even if you talk to one person.
  • Try replacing "was/were" with "am/is/are" in your mind to check if the sentence makes sense (for beginners).
