What Are Personal Pronouns?

Personal pronouns are words we use to replace specific nouns—usually the names of people, animals, or things. Instead of repeating names over and over, we use pronouns like I, you, he, or them to make our sentences shorter and clearer.

There are two main types of personal pronouns:

  • Subject pronouns – used as the subject of a sentence (who or what does the action)
  • Object pronouns – used as the object of a verb or preposition (who or what receives the action)

How to Use Personal Pronouns

Use subject pronouns at the beginning of a sentence, as the doer of the action:

  • I love chocolate.
  • She is reading a book.
  • They went to the park.

Use object pronouns after a verb or preposition, as the receiver of the action:

  • He saw me at the store.
  • Can you help them?
  • We invited her to the party.

Examples in Sentences

  • John is tired. He is tired.
  • Lisa and I went shopping. We went shopping.
  • I like Sarah. → I like her.
  • My brother called Tom and me. → My brother called us.

Tips for Remembering

  • Subject pronouns do the action: I, he, she, we, they
  • Object pronouns receive the action: me, him, her, us, them
  • Replace names with the correct pronoun to avoid repetition:
“Anna is kind. Anna helps people.”“She is kind. She helps people.”
