Possessive Adjectives and Subject Pronouns

In English, subject pronouns and possessive adjectives are related but used differently. Subject pronouns replace the subject of a sentence (who is doing the action), while possessive adjectives show who owns something and come before a noun.

Form and Use of Possesive Adjectives and Subject Pronouns

Here is a table showing the subject pronouns and their corresponding possessive adjectives with examples:

Subject Pronoun Possessive Adjective Example
I my This is my bag.
you your Is that your phone?
he his His car is red.
she her Her name is Anna.
it its The cat is licking its paw.
we our This is our house.
they their Their dog is friendly.

How to Use Possessive Adjectives

  • Use a possessive adjective before a noun (thing, person, animal).
  • It changes depending on the owner, not the thing being owned.
  • Examples:
    • My book is on the table.
    • Their school is big.

Quick Tips

  • Never use an article (a, an, the) with a possessive adjective. Say “my dog”, not “the my dog”.
  • Remember: its (possessive) is different from it’s (= it is).
  • Think: "Who owns it?" Then use the correct word: my, your, his, her, etc.
  • Practice with objects around you: “my pen,” “your chair,” “our classroom.”
