Use of Future Tenses – will, be going to and present continuous

We use different tenses to talk about the future in English. At the A2 level, the most common ones are:

  • will
  • be going to
  • present continuous

1. Will

Form:

  • Subject + will + base verb

Examples:

  • I will call you tomorrow.
  • She will help us with the project.

Use:

  • For decisions made at the moment of speaking.
  • For promises, offers, or predictions without evidence.

Examples:

  • I’m tired. I will go to bed now. (decision)
  • It will rain tomorrow. (prediction)

2. Be Going To

Form:

  • Subject + am/is/are + going to + base verb

Examples:

  • We are going to visit our grandparents.
  • He is going to buy a new phone.

Use:

  • For plans or intentions.
  • For predictions based on what we see or know now.

Examples:

  • I am going to study English tonight. (plan)
  • Look at those dark clouds! It is going to rain. (evidence)

3. Present Continuous for Future

Form:

  • Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing

Examples:

  • I am meeting my friend at 6 p.m.
  • They are flying to Paris next week.

Use:

  • For fixed arrangements or appointments in the near future.

Examples:

  • We are having lunch with the manager tomorrow.

Comparison Table: Will vs. Be Going To vs. Present Continuous

Future Form Form When to Use Example
Will will + base verb Spontaneous decisions, promises, general predictions I will help you with that.
Be Going To am/is/are + going to + base verb Planned actions, predictions based on now We are going to watch a movie tonight.
Present Continuous am/is/are + verb-ing Future arrangements (often with a time) She is meeting the teacher at 10 a.m.

Tip: Use will when you decide at the moment, going to for plans or visible future, and present continuous for fixed appointments.
